Gianmaria Potenza: Elaborating new codes

From May 14 to October 17, 2025, the monumental halls of Palazzo Ferro Fini in Venice will host the exhibition Gianmaria Potenza. “Elaborating New Codes,” an important monographic exhibition project promoted by the Potenza Tamini Foundation, in collaboration with the Veneto Regional Council, and curated by Valeria Loddo. The exhibition focuses on one of the most emblematic series by the Venetian artist: the Elaboratori, created from the early 1990s onwards. Described by critic Nicola Micieli as a point of arrival and renewal in the artist’s career, these works represent a radical turning point in his production and offer a privileged vantage point to understand his artistic evolution, his language, and his capacity to engage in dialogue with the cultural and technological transformations of contemporary society.

Approximately 30 artworks are on display, including historic pieces from Elaboratori and recent works in bronze, marble, and wood, arranged across four thematic rooms. The installation establishes a dialogue between the modularity and seriality characteristic of the 1990s and the material and formal research of recent decades. The exhibited works depict an artistic universe where order and repetition are not rigid frameworks, but open systems in constant flux. Each geometric form is a living element within a sensitive and dynamic narrative. Though inspired by the new codes of the digital era, the Elaboratori are entirely handcrafted, demonstrating how craftsmanship can dialogue with conceptual abstraction. As curator Valeria Loddo affirms, “These works are more relevant than ever. They offer a profound reflection on the relationship between time, technology, and artistic creation, proposing a layered and ever-renewable interpretation.”

To complete the exhibition, a special section is dedicated to the Young Talents Project 2025, which the Potenza Tamini Foundation promotes to foster dialogue between the visual arts and music. On 14 May 2025, a call for entries will be launched, in collaboration with the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Venice, inviting young composers to reinterpret the exhibited works through music. The competition, which closes on 15 September, will feature jurors of excellence, including Gianmaria Potenza, Giovanni Mancuso, Andrea Granitzio, Francesca Scigliuzzo, and the renowned composer Pino Donaggio. The project will culminate in a final concert on December 9, 2025, at the Marcello Conservatory.

Gianmaria Potenza, born in Venice in 1936, is one of the prominent figures in Italian art from the post-World War II period to the present day. A sculptor, designer, and innovator, he has exhibited in six editions of the Venice Biennale, and his works have been showcased in prestigious international venues, ranging from Istanbul to St. Petersburg and from the United States to the United Arab Emirates. Founder of the historic glassworks La Murrina, he has successfully combined tradition and experimentation, becoming an ambassador of Venetian culture worldwide.

The exhibition and related activities reflect the mission of the Potenza Tamini Foundation, established in 2023, to preserve and disseminate the artistic legacy of the Maestro and to support contemporary creativity, with a particular focus on the dialogue between generations and artistic languages.
