The shape of the Soul: the artistic journey of Mirko Roncelli

The artwork of Mirko Roncelli occupies a distinctive position within the landscape of contemporary art, distinguished by a practice that unites formal rigour with emotional tension. His training as an architect has enabled him to develop an original visual grammar: space, in his works, is constructed according to carefully calibrated equilibria, in which universal geometries and emotional perceptions coexist in a single, continuous dialogue. The so-called ‘cities of the future’ constitute one of the most significant nuclei of his output, revealing a lucid and at times unsettled vision of the contemporary world. The urban environment expands until it compresses the human presence, which is frequently reduced to a fragment or a mere suggestion. Within these visionary architectures, a critical reflection emerges on the relationship between the individual and society, between progress and the marginalisation of the human being, a theme that permeates his entire body of work.

Over the years, this reflection has evolved without losing coherence, enriched by new technical solutions and an ever-greater expressive awareness. His numerous participations in international exhibitions and the recognition he has received, from the Côte d’Azur to the Biennale di Milano, through to exhibitions connected with the Venetian art scene, bear witness to a solid and continuously developing artistic career. Awards such as the Trophée Côte d’Azur International Prix Luigi XV° Ville de Nice (2019), the International Prize “Mercurio d’Oro” (2021), the Prize “Protagonisti dell’Arte” at the Biennale di Saronno (2023), as well as his participation in the Biennale di Milano presented by Vittorio Sgarbi, confirm the significance of his standing within the contemporary art world.

The most recent critical appraisals underline how Roncelli’s work is increasingly oriented towards a formal synthesis capable of expressing profound emotional depth. His compositions evoke an austere memory of the past, taking shape as fragments of recollection entrusted to an intimate and harmonious gestural language. This lyrical dimension is accompanied by continuous technical experimentation. The artist’s chromatic development is in constant evolution, enriched by experimental applications of material that extend the pictorial language into an inimitable context. The use of matter, of layering and polymaterial insertions contributes to rendering the painted surface alive and dynamic, capable of conveying not merely images, but fully realised sensory experiences.

Colour plays a central role in this process. Monochromatic tonalities, frequently dominated by greys, blacks, and whites, are traversed by sudden flares of red, which take on a symbolic and narrative value. Matter pursues itself, ripples, plunges into depths, and re-emerges in a multiplicity of sensations. Red, in particular, takes shape as a vital sign, as the lifeblood of existence or as a mark of pain. It is a passion that interrupts the stillness of compositional equilibria and introduces the frisson of tension. Roncelli succeeds in synthesising abstract art as a tangible and concrete concept. The two-dimensional plane glides into a material dimension from which an intimate and personal Neo-Plasticism is fulfilled. Geometry becomes a bond with reality, physical and coherent, articulating the tenets of a renewed Spatialism. What emerges with clarity is the artist’s will to move beyond mere representation, and to arrive at a form of communication that is at once deeper and more universal.

Mirko Roncelli establishes himself as an artist capable of evolving whilst maintaining an unwavering sense of identity, enriching his visual language through experience, recognition, and international dialogue. His painting, suspended between architecture and vision, between matter and light, continues to interrogate our age with sensitivity and depth. His artworks form part of public and private collections in Italy and throughout the world, including the Haegeumgang Theme Museum Collection in South Korea, the Fondazione Lamberti of the Municipality of Codogno, the Italian Embassy in Monaco, the collection of the Church of Los Angeles in Salta, Argentina, as well as various Public Institutions.

Now internationally followed by leading art collectors, gallery owners and art experts, his work is regarded by them as a promising investment for the future.

Art is a necessity, and Mirko Roncelli’s necessity is to explore the architectures of the soul and return their form to us.
