Jacob & Co., Bugatti & Lalique: A Triumph of Time, Power and Light

In a world that rarely pauses, the Bugatti Calandre stands motionless, yet never silent. It is not merely a clock, nor a collaboration between watchmakers and car manufacturers. It is the culmination of legacy, fire, and finesse; a work that defies category and expectation. Born of three masters, Jacob & Co., Bugatti, and Lalique, it represents an audacious collision of time, speed, and light, held forever in crystal.

When Bugatti and Jacob & Co. first partnered in 2019, the world was introduced to a daring vision of timepieces inspired by hypercars. The Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon arrived as a mechanical homage to the thrill of the open road. Four years later, the Bugatti Tourbillon followed, an evolution of technique, emotion, and engineering. But with the Calandre, their journey takes a poetic turn. It is no longer about movement. It is about the moment just before it. The hush before ignition. The breath before flight. And so enters Lalique, the final and most unexpected actor in this composition. For over a century, Lalique has whispered in crystal; its artisans shaping silence into splendour. Their heritage, like Bugatti’s and Jacob & Co.’s, is not simply one of craft but of artistic obsession. This is why the Calandre could only exist at the intersection of these three. Anything less would have fallen short of legend.

At the centre of this extraordinary table clock is an icon resurrected: the Bugatti Type 41 Royale. Created in the 1920s, it remains one of the most imposing and luxurious vehicles ever produced. Adorning its bonnet were two rearing elephants, sculpted by Rembrandt Bugatti, brother of Ettore. They were not ornaments. They were declarations. In the Calandre, they return, etched in crystal, caught mid-dance, their forms both playful and regal. They mirror each other perfectly, echoing the symmetry that once defined Lalique’s most excellent clock designs.

Framing this poetic encounter is the horseshoe grille, the unmistakable symbol of Bugatti design. Its shape, timeless and fierce, forms the silhouette of the dial, with the blood-red Bugatti Macaron floating above it. Every element is deliberate. Every line is memory made physical. Within this sculpture lies the heart: Jacob & Co.’s Calibre JCAM58. This is not a standard movement. It was conceived solely for the Calandre, made of 189 components, anchored by a vertical flying tourbillon. The complication, once created to combat gravity’s effect on static timekeepers, returns to its original purpose. This is no wristwatch. This is a clock that stands still with confidence. The tourbillon spins defiantly, guarding precision against the invisible forces that seek to bend it.

And crowning the entire composition is something utterly unexpected, a gemstone. But not just any stone. It is a Jacob-cut red crystal, carved with 288 facets, burning like a flame held in glass. It speaks of Jacob & Co.’s beginnings in high jewellery, of fire, passion, and unrelenting brilliance. Placed atop the Calandre, it transforms function into theatre. It invites awe, not merely admiration.

The Lalique crystal case, measuring 26 cm, is a canvas. Through an arduous process of casting, cooling, and hand-finishing, the artisans of “Wingen-sur-Moder” achieve a clarity and frost that captures light like a living thing. The elephants appear to breathe. Shadows dance across their flanks. The glass hums with restraint. And yet, for all its complexity, the Calandre exudes calm. It is a paradox: a piece born of speed and fire, rendered in stillness and frost. An object that does not mark time, but holds it. It does not rush. It waits. With an 8-day power reserve, it will outlast conversation, contemplation, and even ambition… It’s a masterpiece made for the legacy.

This is a relic of imagination. And perhaps that is the point. In an era of ephemeral luxury and manufactured rarity, the Bugatti Calandre does not seek attention. It commands reverence. It is a memory cast in crystal, ticking softly at the edge of eternity.
