In the heart of Busto Arsizio, a historic Lombard town, lies a place that seems to defy the usual coordinates of time and space: Tavolo Unico. This restaurant, which opened its doors in 2021, is a sensory work of art, the realisation of a visionary dream by its creator, Massimiliano Babila Cagelli. A former swimming champion, Cagelli has channelled the determination of an athlete into a boundless exploration of beauty and taste, crafting a culinary philosophy that goes beyond merely pairing food with art, instead merging them in a harmonious dance.

Tavolo Unico was born out of Cagelli’s unstoppable passion for art. This love blossomed during breaks between competitions and training sessions when he would visit museums across Europe and begin collecting artworks. His passion for cuisine came later, with experiences alongside renowned chefs, self-taught studies, and a great deal of hard work, all approached with the same discipline as a champion swimmer.

The idea of blending these two passions, cuisine and art, became a reality when he reconnected with his high school classmate, Serena Colombo, an art historian and university lecturer. Together, they published a book with the intriguing title: Even Van Gogh Ate Mussels, a statement of intent, a manifesto of their culinary and artistic philosophy. In this book, Cagelli and Colombo skilfully intertwine stories and recipes inspired by the Impressionists, as if food could, through flavours, paint an imaginary canvas before our eyes.

She recounts, with historical-artistic insight and sobriety, 16 narratives linked to the authentic experiences of Impressionist painters; he creates an equal number of menus with over 70 recipes, including five crafted by Michelin-starred chef friends. These dishes draw inspiration from various paintings, some lesser-known, by Van Gogh and Monet, Manet and Pissarro, Degas and Gauguin, as well as ukiyo-e, the beloved Japanese woodblock prints of the “floating world.”

The natural evolution of all this was the opening of Tavolo Unico in an elegant villa. This place retains the intimate, welcoming spirit of a home yet houses in each of its seven rooms true private collections dedicated to different artistic periods and movements. Time seems to stand still here, allowing space for contemplation and pleasure. Art is not a mere decoration but a visual echo that interacts with the dishes and guests. From De Chirico to American Pop Art, from Dalí to 20th-century Italian masters, each room is a time capsule, a treasure chest allowing guests to enjoy an immersive artistic and culinary experience. And in each room, there is just one table. Unique, just like the experience it offers: dining in complete exclusivity, immersing oneself in the artworks, and being surprised by an evolving menu that tells ever-changing stories, with a chef who steps out of the kitchen to act as a passionate guide.

The Romeo and Juliet suite celebrates eternal love with a romantic and theatrical style. The famous Bocca sofa by Gufram smiles at guests while the room exudes timeless elegance: candelabras, silver cutlery, and hand-blown crystal. Here, dinner transforms into a whisper of love, a suspended memory evoking Shakespearean atmospheres.
The Dalí room transports you to a surrealist world, where pieces inspired by the Catalan genius are reflected in the decor and details that seem straight out of a dream.
The Masterpiece room is a tribute to Impressionist art. The Artworks on the walls converse with Cagelli’s signature dishes, turning dinner into a genuine spectacle.
Then there’s the De Chirico Tavern, where surrealist art inspires a tasting where dishes interpret the wines, reversing the classic concept of pairing and creating new harmonies and sensations. Here, it feels like stepping into a parallel reality, where logic yields to contemplation.

As Picasso once said, “One should not be afraid of perfection, as we’ll never achieve it,” but here, something very close to perfection has been touched. In any case, even imperfection in this place becomes a value, an incentive to experiment, dare, and seek beauty in every little nuance. But Tavolo Unico is also an experience of sharing and culture: from events with classical musicians to themed dinners where art and cuisine enhance each other, everything is designed to make the soul resonate.

And for those wishing to bring this magic home, the gift dinner boxes offer a miniature version of this experience, a gift that promises emotions to share with loved ones.

With Tavolo Unico, Massimiliano Babila Cagelli has created something that goes beyond the mere concept of a restaurant. He has created a place where art and cuisine meet in a new way, where past and present are in constant dialogue. A place where culinary art and visual art blend in a harmonious embrace, giving life to an unforgettable experience capable of making us fall in love with beauty and creativity. This experience intensely stimulates both the soul and the palate.

It is an extraordinary journey where every sense is engaged, and every expectation is exceeded.
