Sensitive skin, otherwise known as having greater reactivity to environmental and internal factors, due to a weakened skin barrier. Clinically, it is skin that reacts immediately and disproportionately to stimuli that, under normal circumstances, should not trigger such responses: these can include redness, widespread dryness, burning or stinging, flaking and even small lesions in severe cases.
Beyond genetics or pathological conditions, what triggers this skin discomfort? There are psychophysical stress factors, which are more crucial than they may seem, hormonal and environmental factors, such as air pollution and sudden changes in climate from cold to hot and vice versa. There is a link between this skin condition and premature ageing: Anna Chiara Cortese, Head Lab at MyCli, told us more about this during our interview.

Anna Chiara, what are the needs of sensitive skin?
I begin with a memory that takes me back to 2006, when I was attending a master’s degree course in cosmetic dermatology at the University of Padua. A renowned dermatologist, then director of the Padua dermatology clinic, explained to us how skin that “makes itself felt” must be treated immediately with specialised protocols capable of reducing inflammation mediators, the real trigger that accelerates the skin ageing process.
