Discovering the world through Sandy Coburn’s lens means letting yourself be guided by her curious eye in search of wonder and amazement, intent on capturing the ethereal and surreal beauty of landscapes, culture and wildlife across five continents and thirty-five countries. Through her photography, Sandy creates artistic images that seek an emotional dimension in exploring the globe: whether it be natural scenery, animals in their natural habitat or man-made cultural design, there is always a search for deeper meaning and intimacy.
Sandy doesn’t take photographs, she creates scenes. She doesn’t capture moments, she creates immersive visual atmospheres that embrace vibrant colour palettes. Her shots are characterised by harmonious beauty, vivid colours and natural light, making them particularly immersive. There is a perfect symmetry linked to the places, in form and substance, that underpins the architecture of each photograph, between sparkling frames of sapphire-coloured streams, the joyful eyes of seal pups and memories retained in the legacy of the places themselves evoked by the atmosphere of the photograph.

She is an American artist who, after directing communications and photography on large USAID-funded projects, decided this year to relocate to Edinburgh, the city of her ancestors, with a deep sense of culture and history. Knowing how to travel is a skill she honed in this previous experience: looking at the world from a multitude of perspectives, collaborating with local communities, respecting the environment. Her artistic photography enjoys this same lens, as it is an art rooted in respect, captured with care, in search of stunning yet fleeting beauty, shot by pausing in a world where chaotic rhythms often prevail.

Sandy, what is your photography about?
My photography shows that the world is richer, deeper, and more alive than we notice. It speaks through vivid colour, expressive eyes, hidden details, and surreal compositions that transform extraordinary and everyday places. Each image invites wonder – to imagine the story behind the moment and feel the emotions it stirs.
I’ve found inspiration across five continents, each with its own tapestry of culture, history, landscapes, and wildlife. Colour is a constant thread, drawing me to jewel tones that glisten against snow-capped mountains, shimmer in turquoise waters, or radiate from city walls.
In landscapes, I return to glacial waters – a fascination sparked early in my career and continued in the turquoise lakes of the Canadian Rockies, the cerulean depths of Patagonia, and the teal streams of the Tibetan Plateau.
My cultural work highlights the light and symmetry of historic architecture, while my animal portraits reveal personality and presence – from the mischief in a lemur’s gaze, the playfulness of seal pups, the bonds between penguins and puffins – bringing warmth, joy, and connection to any space.
Together, these works preserve fleeting moments and transform them into fine art – inviting viewers into scenes of beauty that rival their wildest dreams.

What conditions do you look for when capturing animals, landscapes, and architecture?
Extensive research goes into each shoot. I collaborate with locals, fellow photographers, and boutique organisations to reach destinations at their best light and season. That preparation – shaped by my international development career, where trust and cultural awareness were essential – ensures I arrive when conditions align to make an image feel alive.
Colour is more than a feature of a scene – it is often the subject itself. I structure compositions to let jewel tones take centre stage: sapphire waters, emerald valleys, ruby cliffs, turquoise ice. Through light, shadow, atmosphere, and post-production, I aim to preserve the vibrancy that defines my style.
For landscapes, I seek places that feel surreal and larger than life – glacial waters, mineral-rich cliffs, and sunlit stone formations that shimmer with vivid colour. My series on Chile’s Marble Caves, with its luminous blues and sculpted reflections, captures this otherworldly quality.
With wildlife, I look for conditions that reveal both personality and presence. A seal pup’s glinting eye, a puffin’s feathers catching the light, the sheen of penguins in their colonies – natural light and close focus make each portrait both intimate and alive.
In cultural photography, I am drawn to historic architecture and the artistry woven into everyday spaces. A Moroccan doorway bathed in afternoon sun, the intricate tilework revealed by shifting shadows – these moments of colour and design bring the structures’ stories forward through time.

Your photographic experience is rooted in the storytelling of your previous professional career. Do you still tell and document stories?
Yes – but the stories I tell have shifted. My background is in humanitarian communications, where I told stories of resilience and transformation. That work was incredibly meaningful, but fine art photography allows me to pursue the places and details that ignite my imagination. The shift isn’t about leaving one world behind – it’s about following my lens toward a different kind of storytelling, one rooted in wonder, beauty, and connection.
Today, my photography is both personal and professional. I follow what fascinates me: surreal landscapes, glacial waters, cultural details, and the expressions of wildlife. At the same time, I remain open to commissioned assignments from organisations that want to tell their story through my lens. Whether personal projects or commissions, my goal is the same – to create images that capture fleeting moments and transform them into lasting art.

Who are your main interlocutors and how do you interact with them?
I want people to feel immersed – as though they’re experiencing the depth, vibrancy, and atmosphere of a place through the beauty of my lens. I aim for a balance of awe and intimacy: the vastness of a glacier that humbles you, paired with the mischievous glance of a lemur that makes you smile.
My work connects with private collectors, gallery curators, and corporate buyers in luxury hospitality and high-end interior design. Each group approaches the art differently – some seek the transformative effect a large-scale print can bring to a room, while others value the cultural resonance of images that carry both beauty and story.
I am represented by Chrissy Moore Art Advisory, who engages with these audiences to identify opportunities that align with both my creative vision and the needs of her clients. Together, we curate selections for exhibitions and collaborate with galleries and private sector partners to customise scale and finish and ensure each project honours both the art and the spaces it inhabits.
This fall, my work will be exhibited at the Untitled Artists Fair, London (5-7 September), the Edinburgh Art Fair (19-21 September), and Vanishing Points, a curated exhibition by invitation with Chrissy Moore Art Advisory, Edinburgh (15-20 October).
