Dolce&Gabbana Spring/Summer ’23: From Marilyn to Kim Kardashian

Temporal evolution of icons to the provocative corset. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana choose to collaborate with America’s most-watched reality star, entrepreneur Kim Kardashian, known for her various cosmetics and underwear brands. Undoubtedly one of the most influential women in America, she gives her name to the show, entitled “Hello, Kim”, a revisitation of a series of iconic pieces that marked the 1987-2007 decade of Maison’s history with typical references to Kardashian’s style.

Filmed very well is the short film with Kim, a homage to the Italian spirit of the Maison, to the Dolce Vita and a shower of re-editions of the most famous garments. I am starting with the corset, which turns into a crystal bodysuit, bustier dress, crop top and metal obi belt, for a complete revival of Dolce & Gabbana‘s most glorious period. As many will know, Kim chose to wear Marilyn Monroe’s dress to the Met Gala in New York and was even criticised and accused of causing damage to the museum dress.

Much of the credit for Kim’s style is due to her ex-husband Kyne West, a true designer, brilliant and innovative. Many call her a Marylin version 2.0, an inspirational muse, an unprecedented creative direction. Now I wouldn’t exaggerate because when it came to Marylin, she far removed the world of trash and sex tapes and vulgarity from her.

Nevertheless, the Dolce & Gabbana Spring Summer 2023 fashion show was successful. The collaboration with the Kardashian family and Dolce & Gabbana had already begun with the organisation of sister Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s wedding in Portofino (where all the guests and family wore the brand’s most famous archive pieces). Moving on from Kim to more natural beauty at the event, the other undisputed young star of the event was the refined Deva Cassel.

Observing the very young model Deva Cassel on the Dolce & Gabbana spring-summer 2023 catwalk brings to mind her mother, Monica Bellucci, in the golden age of the 2000s. Generally in pursuit of its typically Mediterranean aesthetic characterised by Sicilian motifs, black lace and fruit on fabrics, Dolce & Gabbana has been a consistent brand making the corset its workhorse for this collection.

Today, more than ever, corsets are therefore imposing themselves as the Spring Summer 2023 fashion trend, paving the way for two possible stylistic interpretations that also hark back to the archives of the 1990s and 2000s. Always sexy provocative and daring for a woman who always gets what she wants.
