Fashion and art have long been intertwined, often influencing each other. In recent years, we have seen the resurgence of the classic graphic tee and graphic prints being incorporated into different areas of the fashion industry. As fashion houses and graphic artists continue to collaborate, we see graphics in all kinds of outfit choices. For example, in streetwear, a bright orange graphic tee can be paired with dark oversized track pants, or in activewear style, graphic print leggings can be matched with a boldly coloured crop top. We take a deep dive into the world of graphic prints in fashion. Looking at the rising popularity of these designs and the reasons more people are incorporating this look into their everyday style.
The graphic tee resurgence
Let’s start from the beginning… When did graphic prints hit the mainstream fashion industry? Fashion designer Katharine Hamnett from Britain is one of the names considered to be responsible for this trend. In the 1980s, she bought out a range of block letter slogan shirts; many were political, and their controversy helped bring them worldwide fame. Preceding this, graphic t-shirts were only really seen in the context of military, film and political campaigning. Following this, the Y2K era was a great time for fans of fashion graphic prints. Funny, sarcastic and in-your-face slogans were all the rage and were popularized by celebrities in the music and film industries. For example, many remember singer Britany Spears’ “Dump Him” shirt and Paris Hilton’s “Stop Being Desperate” top is still considered iconic. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, graphic t-shirts remained a staple item in both adult and children’s clothing sections at all major retailers. The style was trendy in women’s fashion but was worn by all who enjoyed the art style. Now, Gen Z is bringing back the graphic tee. Many younger people love to sport graphic clothing, from colourful abstract prints to funny and borderline offensive slogans. For instance, influencer Addison Rae modelled the look in the Praying x Adidas campaign in the summer of 2022. The bikini top featured the words “Father” and “Son” in bold typography, with the bottoms completing the phases with the words “Holy Trinity”.
Graphic prints are not only reserved for t-shirts…
Graphic prints can be seen in all areas of fashion. Outwear is one example, with coats and jackets canvased with bold, abstract graphic designs. These statement pieces are versatile and considered to be very fashion-forward in many circles. Many purchase these as investment pieces that they will wear time and time again. Even jeans have not escaped this art style. Designs on jeans vary widely, from small, subtle embroidered details to bold graphic art that takes over the entire footprint of the material. Distressed denim looks excellent with graphic design patches for an edgy, stylish look, and of course, printed t-shirts remain a favourite way to add a personal touch to any outfit.
So why are graphic prints becoming so popular?
One of the main reasons that people opt for incorporating graphic prints in their fashion choices is self-expression. Graphic designs allow them to show off their personality and interests. This could be lyrics from a favourite band or singer or a recreation of the print from their favourite graphic artist. Those who love Y2K fashion often embrace the graphic print look, which brings with it a sense of nostalgia and fun. Another reason is that graphic designs frequently start conversations, especially those that feature thought-provoking or controversial slogans. Wearing these designs allows the individual to express a point and converse with others on the topic.
It is also a very versatile look that can be styled in many different ways. Using the right tones, accessories, and footwear, you can dress up or dress down a graphic print outfit.
