The date is already set for the twenty-seventh edition on Saturday 22 February 2020 with a change of location, the Scuola Grande della Misericordia. The dances will open to the rhythm of the theme “Carnival Rhapsody: Provocation, Redemption, Miracle“.
Il Ballo del Doge 2020 will express the Venice Carnival through the symbolism of rhapsody, which in its musical sense translates to the freedom to interpret a theme without fixed patterns, a succession of cues that encourage an exploration of improvisation, in which everyone can tell the story according to their own inspiration.
Il Ballo del Doge is a Venetian rhapsody given that, like the free-themed musical composition so dear to Brahms and Gershwin, the famous masquerade ball is the choral summa of individual artistic expressions of excellence, presided over by conductor, creator and creative soul Antonia Sautter.
From artistic performances to dances, from floral design to the menu, everything comes together perfectly, for one evening, to culminate in the wonder that is Il Ballo del Doge. The underlying sub-themes develop every last detail to create the overall sense of the main theme.
Provocation: in its broadest sense, provocation is not simply an instigation or a challenge, but everything that pushes one to act, to dare and to desire in harmony with one’s truest essence. Putting on period dress and becoming fully immersed in the dreamlike atmosphere of Il Ballo del Doge means allowing yourself the luxury of leaving your comfort zone to experience the unknown and live the unusual.
Redemption: the highest expression of freedom and liberation that goes beyond Carnival. Redemption makes one savour this feeling of emancipation and release one from the constraining logic of everyday life to experience an indispensable sense of wonder.
Miracle: all that ardently desired comes true is the miracle, the maximum aspiration that naturally manifests itself, as we have always invoked it.
Here the Carnival merges with real life, inviting us to find the courage to be happy. Or at least carefree. For one night, Il Ballo del Doge, obliges us to get away from the predictability of everyday life by assuming a new identity through the mask, perhaps the truest one, that everyone holds onto in their own intimate imaginary world.
