Giuseppe Veneziano was born in Mazzarino on 22 February 1971. He moved to Palermo for his studies, where he graduated in architecture in 1996. During those years, he dedicated himself to his studies and publishing, collaborating with the most important Sicilian Magazines. Having become an architect, he did not abandon the art of comics.
He continued to draw for various publishing houses, such as Paruzzo Editore and Il Capitello Editore. As he matured, his spirit as an artist continued to grow, and he also dedicated himself to other things. In fact, from 2000 to 2002, he was Director of Education and Lecturer in the history of art at the Giorgio de Chirico Academy of Fine Arts in Riesi.
In 2002, he settled in Milan, where he expressed all his painting skills with strength and character while continuing to work as a teacher. He received his true baptism as an artist in 2006, with an important exhibition at the Luciano Inga Pin Gallery. In 2007, he flew abroad from Milan to participate in the VI St. Petersburg Biennial. He has not stopped, and every year he achieves new important goals. In 2008, he represented Italy, with twenty other artists, in ‘Artâthlos’ in the splendid frame of the XXIX Olympic Games in Beijing.
In 2009, he was a protagonist at the fourth Prague Biennale; in 2011, he was invited to the Italian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale. The following year, he participated in the Italy-China Contemporary Art Biennial at the prestigious Villa Reale in Monza. In 2015, he participated in the exhibition ‘Treasures of Italy’ for the EXPO in Milan. Since 2016, he has been teaching at the Aldo Galli Academy of Fine Arts in Como. But in addition to being a teacher, he has also become an object of study. Critics and magazines consider him to be one of the leading exponents of the Italian New Pop and the Italian Newbrow group: contemporary art that speaks of the present while looking to the past.
Veneziano’s Art investigates Italian, European, and overseas cultures by re-proposing timeless themes in a modern language. He narrates and interprets our liquid-modern society by drawing from a vast repertoire of iconographic sources and different languages, such as classical, contemporary, comic, pop, sacred, and profane paintings. He is a free thinker who follows the news as a spectator, who absorbs and returns, who is provoked and, thus, provokes. Trained in newspaper editorial offices, he uses editorial language that gives his works an undefined key when added to the artistic one. Satirical, without yielding to moralism, biting and amusing but not always easy to interpret, he never shows himself banal. For this reason, he is sought after, above all, by an educated audience.
His works are steeped in daily routines, our most banal gestures and habits. Fairy tales, cartoons, songs, music, and new trends that fall from above and are imposed by the market are desecrated and unmasked. Good and evil mingle in bright and vivid colours, mingling in contradictions, with new morals, making us lose all sense of truth and imposed reasons.
Art is exigency, and Giuseppe Veneziano’s necessity is to fathom the product of the mass media to give us back the true form: his and our reality.
