Memories for a Lifetime with The Italian Batman

What would you say if I told you that real heroes exist and walk among us? I know, it sounds like a script worthy of a science-fiction movie, and yet it’s true. This is the story of Massimo Benetta, the angel behind the Italian Batman’s mask.

The 50-year-old entrepreneur, born in the Italian province of Treviso, is not only known for the success of a business he loved since he was young. He is famous for the desire to offer unconditional joy to children in desperate need of it.

Massimo Benetta loves cars. And it is a hobby that, by an unexpected event, opened his eyes to an unseen world that he is determined to change at any cost. Owner of an amazing Lamborghini Murcielago, identical to the one driven by Christian Bale in the movie Batman, Massimo wanted to break even more out of the ordinary. And so, invited to a work event where everyone was supposed to wear a mask, he appeared dressed as Batman at the wheel of his Lamborghini. He seemed like a character stepped out of a fantasy film.

This incident gave him the idea that will be the starting point of an unprecedented project in Italy. When invited to Monza, the famous host of Formula 1 Car Races, to an event organized for children with disabilities, he came dressed in a Batman suit driving his own Batmobile. There were 1500 kids present, and Massimo would never have imagined what was about to happen. Massimo was sure the kids would jump at the opportunity to ride in Batman’s car. Instead, the only thing they wanted was a photo with their favourite hero.

Massimo was so touched that for the next 8 hours he stood there and took pictures with the kids, and hugged them and let them fulfil their fantasy for as long as they needed to. He later arrived at home, filled with emotions and joy, realizing that he was able to put a smile on the faces of children that desperately needed to forget their pain. This was the defining moment when a man with great financial power chose to use something other than material things to create happiness: the goodness of his heart.

Massimo started visiting ill children in hospital, dressed as Batman, the superhero defender of the weak. He understood that a memory is the most precious gift he can offer to children whose reality almost does not have a place for hope anymore. In the frenzy of 21st-century life, it is close to unbelievable that among us, unseen, walk true ambassadors of good, modern angels with human faces.

The most important playwright of symbolism and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1911, Maurice Maeterlinck, masterfully summed up the essence of good in one phrase. He said that “An act of goodness is of itself an act of happiness.
