Volocopter 2X

Volocopter 2X: at CES in Las Vegas flying with Intel CEO on board. He flew the CEO of Intel, during a performance staged at CES in Las Vegas, the Volocopter 2X, an aero-taxi drone currently under development. At the recent CES in Las Vegas (Consumer Electronics Show) carried in flight on the Volocopter 2X, aircraft with vertical take-off and landing capabilities (eVTOL), Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel, during a remote piloted flight in drone mode.

“It was fantastic – said an enthusiastic Krzanich – it was the best flight I have ever made. Everyone will fly on one of these drones one day.” “It is a flying super computer – adds Florian Reuter, CEO of Volocopter – capable of ensuring a pleasant and safe journey”. The Volocopter 2X has been designed to act as an autonomous aero-taxi (a bit like the Bell Helicopter Urban Aero Taxi presented on that occasion and which we told you about a few days ago), and is equipped with Intel microprocessor and other flight control technologies with redundancy of safety functions.

Dozens of microprocessors control the environment by evaluating turbulence, wind and numerous other flight parameters, thus sending a series of signals to the rotors (driven by electric motors powered by batteries) in a few milliseconds. The latter react and make the necessary corrections instantly in order to ensure the stability of the drone.

The Volocopter 2X made its first manned flight on board in 2011 and recently completed a series of stand-alone flights to Dubai. In 2016 the company received its first provisional two-seater development licences from the German aviation authority and last year it signed an agreement with the Dubai RTA. Investors include names such as Intel and the Daimler-Benz Group. The first, in particular, has recently made significant investments in the development of drones and UAVs, designing and developing software for them.
