Chronographs are one of the most popular complications in watchmaking and are used in timepieces for both men and women. There is something about the chronograph that captures people’s imagination and, as such, this complication is certainly in high demand. Chronographs are very popular because they offer a very accessible complication and one whose standard layout is very attractive. The Epic X Chrono is purpose-built, so it has a technical, sporty style with the chronograph pushers on the side of the case, the balanced bi-compax dial, and the view into the movement through the mineral crystal dial. The exclusive Jacob & Co JCAA05 calibre is partially revealed both on the dial, as well as the case-back side of the Epic X Chrono through smoked crystals. The 260-component calibre offers a combination of highly refined movement decorations on the bridges, self-winding rotor, mainspring barrel, and column wheel.
The column-wheel controls the functioning of the chronograph mechanism inside the Epic X Chrono. Start, stop and reset are all governed by this beautifully hand-finished component: angled, polished and drawn, and fully on show on the case-back side of the JCAA05. Sitting over the exclusive JCAA05 calibre is the anthracite oscillating rotor for the automatic winding of the movement, with red lacquered Jacob & Co Genève engraving. Further decorations include bevelled and polished edges on the bridges, perlage circular graining, as well as the open-worked construction of the mainspring barrel, all beautifully executed.
Bold design meets precious and high-end materials to create the immediately recognizable aesthetic of the Epic X – a watch exterior that is like no other. Comprising 61 components, the Epic X Chrono case measures 47mm wide and 14mm thick, and is water-resistant to a depth of 200 meters – a true testament to the complexity of the design, as well as its highly engineered and equally robust architecture.
The red-tinted mineral crystal dial of the Epic X Chrono reveals the dial side of the beautifully constructed JCAA05 self-winding chronograph calibre. In the top left portion of the dial, the balance wheel is revealed, while at the 6 o’clock position the open-worked mainspring barrel and its fully wound mainspring can be seen, keeping the Epic X Chrono powered up and running on time. Skeletonized hands with Super-Lumi Nova luminescent tips indicate the time in tandem with a rotating inner timing bezel on the Epic X Chrono, adjusted via the crown at the 10 o’clock position. Fascinating engineering solutions and true dedication to the highest standards of functionality and wearing comfort are reflected in these smallest details.
